What is Sumipex® Meguri® Chemically Recycled PMMA?

Unlike conventional PMMA made of fossil based raw materials, taking advantage of state of the art technology jointly developed between The Japan Steel Works, Ltd. and Sumitomo Chemical, PMMA scrap is efficiently chemically transformed to high purity methyl methacrylate (MMA), which is then polymerized to form Sumipex® Meguri® Chemically Recycled PMMA.

What is the timescale for the project?

In December 2022, we built a new chemical recycling pilot plant. We are working on the validation and scale-up of manufacturing technology and marketing activities with the aim of commercializing it in 2025.

Can you supply samples?

We are working hard to prepare samples of Sumipex® Meguri® . Should you wish to be informed of when samples are available, please fill in the form below and send it to us.

How is it sold?

Once commercialized, we will use the mass balance approach to allocate recycled PMMA (※).
※We will assign a certain percentage of chemically recycled MMA to PMMA produced.

What about traceability?

In order to provide sustainable products with reliable quality, we plan to acquire third-party certification to assure raw material traceability and recycling credentials.

What about CO2 emission reduction?

We use an original Sumitomo Chemical carbon footprint (CFP) calculation system to visualize lifecycle assessment (LCA), and are currently validating the impact on the reduction of CO2 emissions.
