Sumitomo Chemical Receives the Deputy Chief's Award (by Minister for Foreign Affairs) of the First Japan SDGs Award
Jan. 5, 2018
Sumitomo Chemical has been granted the Deputy Chief’s Award (by Minister for Foreign Affairs) as a recipient of the first Japan SDGs Award. The Japan SDGs Award is conferred by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Promotion Headquarters, a Cabinet body composed of all Ministers, to those companies and organizations which have demonstrated outstanding initiatives toward achieving the United Nations' SDGs adopted in 2015.
In 2016 and thereafter, Sumitomo Chemical designated as "Sumika Sustainable Solutions" its certain products and technologies that will contribute to mitigating global warming or reducing the burden on the environment and has been working ever since to accelerate their development and extended use. In addition, under the Company's employee participation type project, called "Our Sustainable Tree", employees post messages on the Company's internal website about how they believe they can contribute to the SDGs. This project is steadily inspiring in Group companies' employees in Japan and abroad the awareness that each of them is the very person who can contribute to attaining the SDGs.
The Award to Sumitomo Chemical duly recognized the importance of the Company's initiatives toward achieving the SDGs in that they could be undertaken also by other companies, serving as a role model both in Japan and in the rest of the world. On top of that, the Award highly valued the Company's contribution over many years to promoting Africa's integrated advancement in economy, society and the environment through the Olyset® Net business whereby mosquito net local production created job opportunities, the working environment for women improved, and constructing school buildings helped enhance educational assistance.
Sumitomo Chemical Group continues to vigorously take on the challenges of creating further new value toward realizing a sustainable society. To this end, under the leadership of top management, each and every member of the Group companies will fully exercise their creativity as they engage in their day-to-day business.
