Sumitomo Chemical Establishes Sustainability Promotion Committee

Sumitomo Chemical has newly established a Sustainability Promotion Committee, an enhanced body of its former CSR Promotion Committee, to strengthen its Group-wide integrated initiatives toward achieving a sustainable society through business activities.

As represented by such global initiatives as the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of the Sustainable Development Goals （SDGs） and the commencement of the Paris Agreement, the international community is currently undergoing major transformation in many quarters. Amid the changes, there are strong calls for business enterprises to undertake environmental, social and governance （ESG） initiatives from a viewpoint of their long-term growth.

As far as Sumitomo Chemical is concerned, based on the Sumitomo Business Principle of maintaining harmony between the individual, the nation and societyーmeaning that its business must benefit the nation and society, not just its own interestsーthe Company has actively been tackling a wide array of issues, such as social contribution and environment protection, through activities conducted by various departments across the Company. In addition, with the adoption of the SDGs, the Company has been expending constant efforts to help its employees and those of Group companies worldwide fully understand the significance of achieving the SDGs through a shared approach called "TSP", namely "under Top management leadership, through offering business-driven Solutions and with Participation of all the management and employees.

The Sustainability Promotion Committee will work to help accelerate the Company's initiatives towards achieving the SDGs and resolving other issues society faces by keeping Sumitomo Chemical Group’s business activities in a holistic perspective and by evaluating its specific instances of contribution to sustainability from a broader point of view.

Sumitomo Chemical Group will continue to vigorously take on the challenges of creating new value through collective capabilities of chemistry.
