Sumitomo Chemical Newly Designates Six Products and Technologies as Sumika Sustainable Solutions Helping Build a Sustainable Society

Aug. 3, 2020

Sumitomo Chemical ("the Company") has newly designated six of its products and technologies as Sumika Sustainable Solutions (SSS), the Company’s five-year-old effort to help build a sustainable society. With the addition of these six products and technologies, the total number of SSS-designated products and technologies is now 54, amounting to approximately 480 billion yen in terms of sales revenue in fiscal 2019.

New designations were given to a high performance insulating coating mainly used for automotive batteries, a touch sensor manufacturing technology used for foldable smartphones, polypropylene materials for aluminum metallization film which can help decrease food loss as a food packaging material, and agricultural irrigation tubes that enable efficient use of water. These products and technologies are available from the Sumitomo Chemical Group.

The Company believes that it can solve global issues and secure many business opportunities through its products and technologies, which can help society reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the impact of climate change. The SSS program is an initiative started in 2016 to give designations to in-house products and technologies that help combat climate change, reduce society’s impact on the environment, and contribute to the effective use of resources. In November 2019, the Company positioned sales revenue of SSS-designated products and technologies as a key performance indicator (KPI) for its progress in addressing the seven material issues the Company has identified. The Company is now aiming to achieve sales revenues of 560 billion yen from SSS-designated products and technologies by fiscal 2021, the final year of the current Corporate Business Plan.

The Sumitomo Chemical Group will continue to create and offer solutions that contribute to a sustainable society by capitalizing on various technologies that it has cultivated to date as an integrated chemical company operating in diverse industrial fields.
