Sumitomo Chemical to Participate in PIAE 2024, One of the World's Largest Conferences on Plastics for Automotive Applications

The Sumitomo Chemical Group will participate in the PIAE–International Professional Congress for Plastics in Cars, which is one of the world’s largest conferences for plastics experts in the automotive industry, to be held in Mannheim, Germany, from Wednesday, June 19 to Thursday, June 20, 2024. Sumitomo Chemical Europe, Sumitomo Chemical’s European subsidiary, will be showcasing applications of Sumitomo Chemical’s high-performance engineering plastics targeted at the next-generation electric vehicle (EV) mobility market, which is expected to grow in the future. The exhibit features Sumitomo Chemical’s cutting-edge automotive solutions, including lightweight materials, and their applications for EVs. Sumika Polymer Compounds (UK), another subsidiary, will also exhibit and hold a presentation on Sumitomo Chemical’s latest technology for reducing a carbon footprint using glass fiber-reinforced polypropylene (PP) compounds for automotive applications.

Sumitomo Chemical Europe will present a concept model of the Cell-to-Pack battery enclosure using SUMIKASUPERTM LCP, which the company has developed with Forward Engineering GmbH (located in Munich, Germany). This concept model is being further developed with Institute for Plastics Processing in Industry and Craft at RWTH Aachen University (located in Aachen, Germany).
Sumitomo Chemical Europe will also exhibit the plasticized in-wheel motor using SUMIKAEXCELTM PES, developed by Sumitomo Chemical in cooperation with Toda Racing Co., Ltd. (located in Okayama, Japan), and the slot liner for EV motors using SUMIKASUPERTM LCP.
Sumika Polymer Compounds (UK)’s Exhibit
Sumika Polymer Compounds (UK) will present the under-engine shield using Sumitomo Chemical’s new generation recycled PP compound (from the THERMOFIL CIRCLE® F*12R series). This PP compound is a glass fiber-reinforced grade (20 or 30 wt%) with a recycled PP content of 50%. Compared to virgin glass fiber-reinforced PP, it is better able to achieve weight reduction without compromising technical properties such as high flowability, high elongation, high impact strength, and excellent heat aging properties.
